Another one of her favorite shows was Flipper
At one of their family dinners, all of the older siblings decided to play a trick on their baby sister. While they were eating, they said, "Caro what do you think of the dinner?" She said that she liked it. At this point they told her that they were eating Lamb Chops from the television show! She of course burst into tears and ran away from the dinner table. At another family dinner, they asked her the same question "Caro what do you think of dinner?" Again she told them that she liked it and once again her older siblings played an evil trick! They told her that they were eating Flipper. They had enjoyed playing this little tricks on her but I can't imagine being the one having the tricks played upon.
In our class discussion it was quite interesting to see what people would normally eat with no problem, under distress and then never. Most of the things such as cheese with worms, I would never eat. However, I think if I was put into a situation where it was life or death, many of us would eat things that would disgust us. The television Fear Factor often did this to people. Have them eat bull testicles, worms, cockroaches and grasshoppers just to win a prize. I wonder how far some of the people would have gone.
Interesting story! Thanks for sharing it with us. I find food taboos fascinating -- what is considered "normal" in one culture may seem rather odd to people in another.
ReplyDeleteTheresa,
ReplyDeleteI loved your blog! I can't believe that they played jokes like that on her, poor thing. Something similar happened to my husband, but it wasn't a joke. They had a parakeet named Turkey. They were having dinner one night and he asked what they were having and his mom said, "We're having turkey." He ran out of the room crying and his dad asked what had gotten into him and they finally realized that he thought that they were eating their bird. The only story that I can remember from my experience is that my mother raised me as a vegetarian, but I could eat meat, but she never gave me any. I was at my aunt's house one night and she told me they were having meatloaf. I made a horrid face, but when I took a bite I had the biggest smile and said, "There's meat in this meatloaf!" Your experiences definately add a twist and a new angle to cultural foodways! I agree about not eating the worm cheese, but to each his own. I would eat a lot of strange foods, but even in desperate times I don't know if I could eat one of my pets. Thanks for sharing! It was educational!
Theresa,
ReplyDeleteIt is really funny to me that you posted about Lamp Chop. I remember having the same reaction when my mother told me that we were eating lamb one night. I absolutely adored lamp chop and barney while growing up- they were my favorite. But for some reason I completely forgot about the impact Lamp Chop TV had on me during childhood until I read your post just now, at age 20!
On an even more personal note, I think I would eat most anything to win a prize on fear factor. But ONLY if I had a knife and fork to cut the food down to size and a tall glass of water to swallow the taste down to the back of my throat, like how I'd swallow a large vitamin pill.
